Karolina Jabłońska, Frozen Head
Karolina Jabłońska Frozen Head, 2022 Oil on canvas · 150 × 150 cm

On Karolina's paintings it is either cold or warm, and I really can feel the temperature coming off the canvas, though I have no idea what powers she uses to do it. This one was painted during a residency at The Fores Project in London and nods to the French phrase L'appel du vide, the call of the void, that hard-to-explain, sudden urge to do something dangerous or irrational that you have no intention of actually doing. One day I will think about all that more seriously. For now I am still picking my jaw up off the floor after realising that Karolina put a sprig of dill in there too.

The painter

Karolina Jabłońska (born 1991) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow and co-founded the Potencja group. She paints the body from inside the feeling, often her own, enlarged and pushed past comfort, with colour cold or warm enough that you sense the temperature coming off the canvas. She took second prize at the Bielska Jesień painting biennial and has shown at the Museum of Modern Art and the Raster gallery in Warsaw.
