After all these paintings I still wait for each new one the way children wait to open presents under the tree. I remember rushing everyone on set because I knew this canvas had just arrived from Paris and was waiting for me. I burst in out of breath, apologised for being late, said hello clumsily, because I had not expected such depth and such force. Damn, I hate making a poor first impression.
The painter
Konrad Żukowski (born 1995) studied at the academies of fine arts in Krakow and Vienna. He paints domestic, psychologically charged scenes that tilt the ordinary house slightly off, full of figures caught peeking and a quiet, low dread, with something of the spirit of early-twentieth-century Montmartre about them. He has shown in Warsaw, Athens, New York and Paris.
